Five Rules for Emerging Artists to Live By

1. Exude Professionalism. Spend the money or find an advanced photography student to take photos are your work. You will probably not get a response from a Gallery. Also, when you get a call for artists, follow all the rules and guidelines. (BECA Gallery)

2. Keep creating. It takes a lifetime to be an overnight success as an artist. Keep painting and perfecting your craft. (International Artexpo )

3. Success ..maybe a long time in coming, but I think an artist has to be prolific and proactive in promoting their work. (Lisa Fondo)

4. Find your strategy. Artists should be very picky about who you have representing you.
(Studio Fine Art)

5. Stay Open and Realistic. In life we are always looking for that one piece to the puzzle that’s going to open the doors to everything beyond, and that is not necessarily a realistic approach to making it in the art world. Be open to showing your art in many different venues. (Fine Art Management Corp.)

Upcoming Workshops

This fall I will be giving 4 workshops at the Spruill Arts Center.

Collage Workshop: Layer by Layer Exploring the Art of Collage

2 sessions: Sat., Sun. 10 AM -4 PM 10/17 - 10/18/2009

The creative possiblities of working with collage are infinite. You will learn many ways of designing your papers and using other materials to enhance your collages. No other medium will give you such a variety of exciting alternatives. We will be designing color on tissue paper, encasing objects between two layers of tissue, using paint to alter color, connecting items with drawn lines, adhering objects with beeswax and giving mat board the look of metal. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Collage is a freeing and joyful way to express yourself.

Supply list available at www.spruillarts.org
Non-member $170; Member $150

Sculpted Canvas Workshop

2 Sessions; Sat, Sun 10 AM - 4 PM 11/7 - 11/8/2009

Bring your artwork to another dimension! Learn how to use mat board, foamcore, tissue paper & paints to create a three-dimensional construction on canvas. Add another level to your painting or mixed media projects. This class is limited to only 10 students. A $10 materials fee is payable to instructor at workshop; Additional supplies will be needed; see www.spruillarts.org for Supply List. Please bring a sack lunch.

Abstract Mixed Media

Thursdays 10:30 AM - 1 PM 9/24 - 10/29/2009

Anybody can enjoy experimenting with abstract art. It does not matter if you have never been able to master perspective or paint a portrait. So what exactly is abstract painting? It may be inspired by themes in the outside world, interesting patterns or by nature itself. Abstract painting will encourage you to try out colors, play with shapes and turn those doodles into works of art. Unlock your imagination with experimental techniques. You will be able to revitalize your work almost immediately. For the beginner and the intermediate artist. You will learn how to face the blank page, how to do acrylic skins for your paintings and how to achieve many forms of textures. Supply list available at www.spruillarts.org.

Non-member $145
Member $125

Advanced Abstract Mixed Media

Fridays 10:30 AM to 1 PM 9/25 - 10/30/2009

Explore creating images using your personal inner vision and discover your style. Learn to creat patterns and designs. Stimulate your creative impulses. There will be a variety of methods for developing expressive color and textures, plus techniques with collage, layering, stamping and using gold & silver leaf. This class is an extension of the Abstract Mixed Media course. I welcome former students as well as new students to this course.. If you have taken my class before, you should have all the required supplies. Otherwise, see the supply list at www.spruillarts.org.

Non-member $145

Welcome to my blog

I've titled it "Artistic Insights" - it's a broad title. I want to include not only items regarding visual art, but also about the artistic life of an artist.

Basically we are all artists, whether we paint or not. We are artists of our lives. We color it the way we see it - right or wrong, the choices we make and live by. One thing you should remember, we can always repot ourselves by making other choices. Age has no factor in our lives. Many people have achieved their goals later in life. It is a constant and never-ending journey.

Note: Due to recent inquiries about the painting in this post, I am pleased to tell you prints will be available soon.
